Life With A Bear

Life With A Bear

It’s January and that’s when those New Year’s resolutions are kept the best right? I must be on a roll because I just made a little change to this here blog. I like my little blog, but I was not satisfied with the web address. It wasn’t what I really wanted when I started out and it didn’t reflect the true nature of my blog, even through it’s few incarnations. So let’s shake things up a bit, shall we?

I purchased a domain! A what? A web site, silly!

So now, if you want to find this charming little blog of mine, just use my new web address. The old address will still bring you here, but this is more in line with what is going on around this place. I have to give the credit for the name to my dearest hubby. He is my Honey Bear and with all of our little cubs, it was very fitting. That’s also why this is called “The Bear’s Den”. Eventually, if all goes well, everything will be done through my new domain. I don’t dislike the current blog host, I would just like to be more autonomous. But that’s much, much, much further down the road.

(Funny side note, Honey Bear and I are both sitting here blogging tonight.  Hee hee hee
Ok, so it was only funny to me.  Let’s continue.)

You will also see a change in the look of the Bear’s Den. I haven’t settled on what I want it to look like just yet. It just needs a fresh look. Or I’m having a mid-life crisis. Either way, I’m changing it, so don’t be surprised if it looks different the next time you come back.

But, until then, from the new home of the Bear’s Den,, big ol’ bear hugs!

“Swap”ing Things Around

This year I want to expand my sewing abilities.  Most all of the sewing I have done has been beginner-intermediate level, and none of it, with the exception of two pieces ever, have had any appliques. I made this quilt several years ago that has appliqued elephants around the outside. It was this experience that made me not want to try it again for many years.

Then I made this jumper for Doll Face. This was all free-hand and did not have any stabilizing base so it slipped around and puckered in places. It’s not a very clean looking job, but it was cute anyway.

Earlier this month I signed up to do a Valentine’s swap. This is where you are given a persons name, and you are to make something small-ish to send it to them. Since this is a Valentine’s swap, the recipient does not know from whom they will be receiving their little gift. Some of the things people been posting on the swaps FB page are beautiful! I can’t wait to see what is sent to me. I search Pinterest for some inspiration and found this little mug rug and knew I had plenty of scraps in my stash to take a stab at it.

This is going to give me some practice at not only applique, but micro applique and free motion quilting.  I have never in my life tried to do this. I love the look it gives quilts and, like I said before, I want to expand my skills. Plus, with the small size of the mug rug, I shouldn’t have too much difficulty learning this new skill. I’ve gotten started on the applique and have been playing with the different decorative stitches on my machine. So far I am happy with the results, but I ran out of red thread and I need to get to the store for more. I’m also making a mug cozy to match. Until then, I need to make some curtains for my husbands office. (They will be done this week! I promise!!!)

New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year everyone!! I hope y’all had a blessed Christmas! We had a flurry of activity during the holiday season. Children’s choir for church, two school Christmas plays, Sunday School parties, adult choir at church, three Christmases, and then the new year. (We don’t do anything for new year since the majority of our children are 4 and under.) During all this, we also had a yucky little tummy bug roll through the house and I was trying to sew stuff, on top of being stressed about some non-sewing things. Oh! And Doll Face decided, the week of Christmas, that she no longer wanted to be in diapers. So it was potty training boot camp, too. Talk about crazy!! I had a mini meltdown Christmas eve night. It was not pretty, but I felt much, much better.

School has been back in session for a week and it feels good to be back in our normal routine. There are always so many things that I want to get done on the days that everyone is at school, I hardly know where to start! But I managed to make a small bin for some of the boys toys and I have finally started on a dress for one of my nieces for Christmas. (Yeah, a little late. I know.) I don’t believe in new year’s resolutions, because I know I won’t keep them. So instead, I’m going to make some small, doable goals for myself. And if I don’t get to some of them, then that’s ok. I’m not going to stress about it.

I need to put away a ton (and it probably is a ton) of clothes, rearrange the rooms, paint one of the rooms (eventually), do a mini upgrade to the upstairs bathroom, clean all the windows down stairs (inside and out), paint miles of trim, sew, and sew for myself. I also want to do a few sewing swaps.  I’ve already joined a valentines swap, so I’ve been scouring Pinterest for ideas. I think I know what I’m going to make. I can’t wait to get started!

That’s not a comprehensive list, but it’s a start. And we all have to start somewhere.

Until next time, Mister E says stay cool!

Stay Cool
